Guns in (where else) America

This post is all about guns. Blam blam. Enjoy.

So Josh (Sara's ridiculously awesome hubby) took Dad and us kids out shooting. We drove out of town to the edge of the farming belt, onto the high desert plateau. It was awesome- a kind of sizzling hot moonscape. No life except for sun-bleached grass, stunted grey-green shrubs and little mounds of dirt which, we were told, were made by subterranean-dwelling "whistle pigs". I still can't say that name without laughing. Whistle pigs.... haha.... okay. A kind of wild guinea pig, apparently. Good target practice for budding hunters. But today we were just going to shoot tins of tomatoes from the clearance aisle at the 7-11.

I can't tell you exactly what the guns were, but there was a .22 rifle (little popgun thing), a .45 calibre pistol, another smaller pistol, a deer-hunting rifle with scope, and a shotgun. You know, the typical "hick-from-Alabama-throws-open-his-front-door-and-yells-'Y'all trespassin' on mah land, clear out before ah blows some holes in yer guts'-kind-of-gun".

And the wierd thing was, it was insanely fun. A bit scary, sure, in the I-could-kill-someone-with-this way, but ridiculously fun. And I wasn't that bad a shot either. Anyway, I digress.

Oh, and the funniest thing was, Josh was showing us his guns (he has a safe full) and said, "I don't have bullets for all of them, but if we need to we can just stop at Wal-Mart on the way and get some."

Where else but America can you buy bullets at Wal-Mart....

Right.

On the way there.

Very American, I thought.

Where we stopped to shoot.

No sound except the sizzle of insects in the grass and the wind whistling in the powerlines.

Child holding lethal weapon.

Caught the shell flying through the air.

Jacob's quarry of choice is "whistle pigs".

Shotgun shell.

I hit it, see?!

Josh was a great instructor.

Redneck.

Over and out :)

Scenic Joys and Roadside Yumminess

So these are on the way back from reunion, which by the way was in Cascade, Idaho.

Ruddy photos always load in reverse order. Grr.

Yes, well that's... mountains.... and trees...

Abstract trees and sun stuff.

We stopped for lunch at an awesome western-themed eating-house thing. This is waiting for our order.

I ordered a mushroom burger. Fail. Not my fault, really- I was expecting a burger for crying out loud, not an edible mountain. That photo really doesn't do it justice. I nearly finished it. Half a pound of best Idaho beef? Gluttony. But it tasted great... and I had Tater Tots for the first time in my life!!!! Whee!!!

"Psst, Napoleon. Give me some of your tots."
"No, get your own!"

Some other people had trouble finishing, too.

As I said, the diner was decorated in western style, complete with a stuffed black bear. Sadly, this would be the closest I got to a bear. Sniff.

A view of a town called Horseshoe, where we stopped for lunch. Hot hot hot. Dry. Blazing sun. Thirst. Hot. Hot hot. That's pretty much Idaho in a nutshell.

This next one is something entirely incomprehensible to me. A four-way stop. Sure, I know the rules- whoever gets there first goes first; if you tie, the person on the right goes first. Still... what's wrong with a roundabout? To have a four-way stop each freaking block is a crazy waste of petrol... On that note, the photo-that-got-away is a sign by the roadside saying: "Say No to Roundabouts". Hello.....??

That's all, amigos.

Family Reunion and other happinesses

Hey, so I'm finally getting some photos up!!! Here they are in no particular order:

James, cousin Sara's boy and pretty much the cutest kid in the universe.

On the bus on the way to go tubing on the Payette River.

About to do the high-wire flying fox thing at camp. It was freakin scary but so much fun... laugh if you like, but the thing it reminded me most of was that scene in Twilight when Edward is leaping from tree to tree ("Do you trust me?" "In theory...") I did it the second time with eyes open and no hands. Booya.

Emily or Kaylee (I can't tell which) in mid-air. Wish I could do it again, sigh.

The girls made tie-dye shirts. I really enjoyed it since I'd never done it before. I think it could be really addictive. Top row, l-r: Me, Kaylee, Emily, Ariana. Middle row: Mum, Mindy, Cynthia. Bottom row: Sara, Darlene.

Mindy styles Jason's hair at breakfast.

Our very cushy accomodation. Schweet. Even had deer wandering right outside in the mornings.

Kent sang some choir songs and I accompanied. He sounded amazing- shame the piano was straight from music hell.

We had a bonfire every night, made s'mores and roasted those yummy little fatty sausages whose name escapes me.

Ok, that's the end of the reunion so more in the next post. xxox

Idaho...

Well, we're here at Trinity Pines Camp and Conference Centre, which is just out of Cascade, Idaho, which is a couple hours north of Boise. It's so beautiful... the main hall, where i'm sitting right now, has this unbelievable view out over the Payenne River, meadows and out to the mountains of the Boise National Forest. The streets and habitations have mean names like Horseshoe Bend, Seven Mile Ranch and Cougar Lodge. Apparently there's bears, cougars, moose (meese?) and what-not out in the wilds... I haven't seen any yet but if I see a bear you'll probably hear the scream from here :P I can't deny, I'd be pretty stoked to see one though. The hall of the conference centre is decorated with these mean deer, elk, moose and caribou heads. The one that I keep looking at when I sit eating looks like Bambi's father. Kinda sad, that. My cousin's husband goes bow-and-arrow hunting in a place called the Sawtooth Wilderness. How freakin cool is that... My cousin says that elk tastes much nicer than beef. Last night when we were sitting around the bonfire making s'mores, there was this huge thunder and lightning storm in the distance. We sat there watching these huge, silent sheets of light flickering behind the hills, making silhouettes of the pine trees and glowing in the clouds. Everything here is on a bigger scale... and that's not just the nature!! ha ha... just everything is bigger: the cars, the snacks, the voices, and yes, some of the people. Even the freaking dandelions on the edge of the road are bigger. As in, as big as my fist. Might get a photo of one. And speaking of photos, they're coming soon. I promise :) Well, I think they're making s'mores without me. Love you all :) xox

In the US and A!

We're here!! Finally got over the jet lag (well mostly), and ready to head out the door to another lunch/dinner/party at rellies' house. It is HOT... so grateful for air conditioning! Last night we had a fire and made s'mores, yum. Little James (my cousin's boy) is so ridiculously cute, he's basically wrapped us all around his little chubby finger. It's awesome to get to know the cousins, these people whom I'm related to but barely know!

Well, we're leaving. Oh, and last night I had a root beer float. Chris, I haven't forgotten your request for A&W root beer :)

Bye now y'all...

Hullo everyone and welcome to my travel blog! I (along with the rest of the family) will be going to the US of A -Idaho, Oklahoma, New York and Florida- and Alberta, Canada. Hope you enjoy following us over the continent! I'll miss everyone at home something bad... :(

Better cut this short or I won't get my bag packed.
